The Psychology Consultants Associates practice specializes in providing a wide range of therapeutic psychotherapy and counseling services for all age groups. Our clinicians are trained in all of the major therapeutic modalities including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - This approach emphasizes the important role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. A CBT approach teaches us that it is our thinking that causes us to feel and act the way we do. Therefore, if one is experiencing unwanted feelings and behaviors the focus of the therapy will be the identification of the thoughts that trigger the feelings and behavior and replacing those thoughts with others that lead to a more desirable reaction.

Behavior Modification – This involves basic methods to alter human behavior through reward and punishment. Strictly followed, there is little analysis of the individual thoughts as the focus is on the behavior, antecedents of the behavior and consequences of the behavior. The therapeutic intervention is to either increase or decrease the targeted behavior for modification. This approach is typically part of an overall treatment pattern in dealing with children and in addressing modification of unwanted behaviors.

Rational-Emotive Therapy (RET) – This is an active and directive solution-oriented approach that focuses on resolving cognitive emotional and behavioral problems. This framework assumes that we all have rational and irrational tendencies. Irrational beliefs prevent goal attainment and lead to inner conflict while rational beliefs lead to better goal achievement and more inner harmony. RET thus focuses on irrational and self-defeating thought patterns and it should be seen as a type of CBT.

Psychodynamic Therapy – This is a general term for insight-oriented therapy that involves understanding the relationship between an individual’s past and their present lives. The therapy is less structured than the other modalities that are mentioned and makes more use of the importance of the therapeutic relationship with the attempt to analyze and modify areas of conflict that may have an historical basis.

Psychology Consultants Associated has practitioners of Object Relations Therapy,  Psychoanalytic Therapy, and Jungian approaches. These treatment modalities best address more pervasive personality problems and painful events in one’s past life.

Therapeutic approaches also vary in the type of therapeutic modality used. Therapy may be conducted on an individual, couples, or family framework. While in most situations, it is clear whether to work with the individual alone, with his/her mate, or within the family context, in some situations one approach may be changed or even combined with another approach as the therapeutic situation evolves.
